JOB DESCRIPTION

 

 

 

TITLE:                                Bank Health Care Assistant 

 

GRADE:                            Band 2

 

QUALIFICATIONS:            NVQ Level II, CCMH, (or equivalent)

 

ACCOUNTABLE TO:          Nursing Bank Manager

 

RESPONSIBLE TO:              Area Shift Leader

 

LOCATION:                      Mental Health areas

 

 

JOB PURPOSE

 

To work as part of a team which provides care and treatment to individuals with mental illness. To provide direct care according to the needs of the service users and within the care programme approach/care management framework.

 

JOB ROLE

 

To provide support, give time to an allocated group of service users and, therefore, promote recovery, assisting in maintaining the links with their community environment. To assist the Care Co-ordinator /key nurse in the planning, implementation and evaluation of individual care plans.

 

JOB SPECIFIC

 

The Health Care Assistant must have the service user’s needs at the fore at all times and use the agreed set of values and skills to underpin their day to day work.

 

Be able to communicate effectively, be empathetic, compassionate and patient with service users.

 

Be non judgemental in approach and think and act calmly.

 

Maintain confidentiality; promote a therapeutic environment, which acknowledges diversity and cultural difference.

 

Demonstrate a good understanding of mental health issues.

 

Ensure that service users engage effectively with the agreed care plans and access appropriate activities provided on a regular and consistent basis.

Positively promote independent living of service users.

 

To be trained to a required level to enable the inputting of information into a computer based care planning package.

 

To be able to communicate routine information in an arena where there will be barriers to understanding, and to be able to use tact and persuasion in a non aggressive manner.

 

Develop a rapport based upon companionship and friendship, but within appropriate and transparent boundaries.

 

Provide regular and practical support to service users and their carers in developing and managing dignity and independence.

 

Provide support with daily living activities and be prepared to assist with practical tasks (feeding, bathing etc).

 

Report regularly to key workers.

 

To maintain adequate records, as required by existing procedures, entering appropriate details in the service user’s case notes, as necessary.

 

Take into account the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act, Infection Control, food hygiene regulations.

 

Attend and participate in agreed training, development and supervision sessions, as an individual and part of the team.

 

To undertake such other duties as may be determined from time to time within the general scope of the post.

 

To work within agreed boundaries and behave in an appropriate manner.

 

CRIMINAL RECORDS BUREAU SCREENING IN RESPECT OF CHILDREN AND VULNERABLE ADULTS AS REQUIRED BY HSC 2002/2008

 

In order to minimise any possible risk of abuse to children and vulnerable adults, a check will be made with the Police on the possible criminal background of the preferred candidate for this post.  Police are authorised to disclose in confidence to the NHS Trust’s nominated officer, details of any criminal record, where one exits, including cautions bind over order and “spent” convictions.  Persons being considered for the position must provide, if any exist, a list of cautions, bind over orders or convictions, before the post can be offered.

 

Any disclosed information will be treated in the strictest confidence.  Personal enquiries about the policy of the Trust may be raised with the Human Resources Advisor.  A check will only be made after permission has been given in writing but refusal to give permission could prevent further consideration for the post.

 

Physical Effort

 

  • There will be a frequent requirement to assist in the moving/lifting/and handling of users  (and to occasionally use restraint (RESPECT trained))

 

 

 Mental Effort

 

  • This post will work at a highly complex level which requires the Post Holder to both concentrate for long periods of the working day and work with a highly unpredictable environment.  There will be a need for prolonged concentration, on occasions, whilst carrying out special observations on unpredictable patients.

 

Emotional Effort

 

  • Will frequently be dealing face to face with users/carers/relatives and imparting information which will be unwelcome and which may be distressing. (refusal for leave, explanation of mental health act, restrictions to level of freedom etc)
  • This post may involve disciplinary and grievance related matters

 

Working Conditions

 

  • Direct patient contact and the potential to deal with disturbed users who may present with both verbal and face to face aggression.  They will frequently have direct contact with uncontained bodily fluids.
